Evolutec's management has extensive working knowledge of building and running successful biotechnology and pharmaceutical businesses. This also includes a wide range of industry and financial expertise from within and outside the sector and specific know-how in bringing technology and products to the market.
Dr David Philip Bloxham
Non-executive Chairman
David has significant experience in the biotechnology industry and has been successful at both the R&D and commercial levels. In 1984 he joined the pharmaceutical industry as Director of Biology Research at Roche Research in the UK. Subsequently he became Research and Development Director of Laboratorios Almirall and joined Celltech in 1990.
During his time in research he was involved with the discovery and development of a number of drugs including saqinivir, tenoxicam, ebastine, Myelotarg®, humicade and CDP870. David was a member of the Board of Celltech when it listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1994 and was Chief Operating Officer of that company. From 1998 to 2001, he was Chief Executive Officer of Cobra Therapeutics Limited until it was sold to ML Laboratories.
He became Chief Executive of Evolutec in May 2001 and Chairman following the appointment of Mark Carnegie Brown .
David is Non-executive Chairman of the Babraham Institute.
Dr Mark Carnegie Brown
Chief Executive Officer
Mark has a background in both scientific and general management. He has a PhD in toxophore resistance and 16 years of wide experience within ICI and Zeneca (now AstraZeneca), including positions in R&D, Business Development, Sales, Marketing and General Management.
As General Manager of Zeneca UK from 1998 to 2000, Mark led the development and implementation of a new business strategy for its UK agrochemical business, negotiated the sale of non-core assets and managed the successful launch of Amistar. He also led the UK mergers and integration team.
Since he left AstraZeneca in 2000, Mark has worked on start-ups with United Business Media Group, managed joint ventures and worked with Candesic, a healthcare consulting group. Mark joined Evolutec on 12th August 2003.
Nicholas J Badman ACA
Chief Financial Officer
Nicholas joined Evolutec in April 2004. Nicholas has 10 years experience in corporate finance and investment banking with HSBC Investment Bank, Schroder Salomon Smith Barney and more recently as a consultant at Gradient Advisory. Nicholas has advised on mergers and acquisitions, flotations and other fundraisings, many of which have involved companies in the Life Sciences sector. Nicholas qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Arthur Andersen in 1994. Prior to that, he completed a short service commission in the Royal Horse Artillery.
Graeme Hart
Non-executive Director
Graeme is an orthopaedic surgeon who has also built a successful business career. He founded Medic International in 1972 and built this into Health Care Services, a USM listed company, which was eventually acquired by Compass Group in 1989.
Currently, Graeme is Non-executive Chairman of Corin Group plc and Neuropharm plc as well as a Non-executive Director of ClinPhone plc.
John V Burke
Non-Executive Director
John is a distinguished senior executive with 39 years experience in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. He has occupied a wide range of positions involving sales, marketing, general management and main board work. His previous companies include Beecham, GD Searle, Merck Sharpe & Dohme and Glaxo where he was Chairman and main board director. He has been involved in the growth of a number of venture capital backed businesses and became Chairman of Evolutec in 1998. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors. Currently John is a Non-Executive Director of Profile Therapeutics plc.
Malcolm Darvell
Non-Executive Director
Malcolm is Chief Executive of Rontech Limited, a privately held company that develops software for the global financial services industry. He has experience in both the financial and biotechnology sectors. He was previously Chief Financial Officer of Tempest Consultants Limited, a company involved in equity market surveys, of Azur Environmental, a microbiology company supplying environmental monitoring equipment, and of Peptech Limited, the Australian listed biotechnology company. Prior to that he was Head of Corporate Finance Advisory at Nomura International and was instrumental in building that franchise.
Andrew Moberly
Company Secretary
Andrew joined Evolutec on a part-time basis in April 2006. Andrew has 20 years international corporate legal experience, working in the London, Paris and Hong Kong offices of Freshfields, the City law firm, before joining the head office of The BOC Group plc and subsequently The Wellcome Trust. Andrew is also company secretary of UK Biobank Limited, an organisation established by The Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council to set up the world's biggest resource for the study of the role of nature and nurture in health and disease.
John Hamer
Director of Development
John joined Evolutec in January 2005 as Director of Development. John has more than 25 years experience of worldwide pharmaceutical development. His early career was in Clinical Research with The Upjohn Company, followed by R&D management roles at Fisons and Johnson & Johnson. More recently he has held senior R&D positions at TSL and Inyx Pharma. John has extensive experience of successful outsourcing and managing collaborations leading to successful product launches in the US, Europe and Japan.
Dr Wynne Weston-Davies
Medical & Development Director
After an early career as a General and Colorectal Surgeon Wynne joined E R Squibb (now Bristol-Myers Squibb) as Associate Director of Clinical Research and has subsequently spent 23 years in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. During this time he has worked or consulted on clinical, preclinical and regulatory affairs for many of the world’s major healthcare companies. He joined Evolutec at its formation in 1998 where he has been responsible for the preclinical and clinical development of Evolutec’s lead molecules. Wynne is a Non-Executive Director of Healthcare Holdings plc, which floated on AIM in March 2004.
Dr Paul Whyte
Director of Business Development
Paul joined Evolutec in October 2005. Paul has over 10 years experience in commercial development in the biopharmaceutical industry and has held positions both in the UK and abroad including at Avidex Limited, Cancer Research Technology, Astra Zeneca and Pierre Fabre Medicament. He holds a PhD in immunology as well as an MBA and his experience includes developing early stage and commercialising late stage products through licensing and joint ventures including Antisoma, Transgene SA and Biomira Inc.

Dr Ian Evans
Director of Research
Ian joined Evolutec in October 2005. Ian has over 20 years molecular biology research experience in academic and industrial settings, following a PhD in Genetics from the University of Nottingham. Prior to joining Evolutec, he was a Senior Research Scientist and Group Leader at Syngenta, where he led a number of multinational biotechnology research projects. He previously held research positions at Celltech, ICI, Zeneca and Astrazeneca, where he gained considerable experience in the characterisation of genes and optimisation of protein production in a variety of biological systems.
Gordon James Hall
Non-executive Director
After an early career in teaching, Gordon built up substantial international sales, management and development expertise with Rank Xerox and Abbott Laboratories.
He became Chief Executive Officer of Shield Diagnostic Ltd (now Axis Shield) in 1990 and was responsible for listing the company on the London Stock Exchange and growing it into a substantial business.
More recently Gordon has been involved with a range of different companies and he is currently Chairman of Osmetech plc and Financial Development Corporation plc as well as a Non-executive Director of IBL plc and Plectrum OIL plc.
Mark Barrie Hatwin
Non-executive Director
Mark was a Partner of Marshall Wace LLP, one of Europe’s largest hedge funds with $13bn under management, until June 2007.
He launched the Eureka Interactive Fund for Marshall Wace in 1999 which became one of the largest global technology hedge funds.
While predominately investing in quoted technology, media and telecom companies, the fund also invested in pre IPO and earlier stage unquoted investment.
Prior to Marshall Wace, Mark was at Enskilda Securities as the Director responsible for International Equities.
